The purpose of the phenomenological study is to explore the factors that contribute to the low completion rates in remedial math courses at a large public university in the southwest Missouri.

What are the factors that contribute to the low completion rates in remedial math course at a community college? at a public university?

What are the math skills freshman are lacking to complete a remedial math class?

What are mental attitudes that remedial math students have that are not completing their class?

  1. Good Cynthia!! Why do you think you chose the wrong topic??? I think this is turning out nicely!! Your purpose statement looks good, except remove "the" in front of southwest.

    Research Questions:
    1. setting should be consistent with your purpose statement. If you are going to look at both university and community college then add both to your purpose and break this into two questions.

The other option is to conduct a mixed methods study and to compare the math skills and mental attitudes of those who complete and those who are not completing for your last two questions. If you choose to go this route then you can measure this via a survey, but you would need to revise your purpose to something like

The purpose of the mixed methods study is twofold: to (a) explore the factors that contribute to the low completion rates in remedial math courses at a large public university in southwest Missouri, and (b) compare the math skills and mental attitudes of students that successfully complete remedial math to those that do not successfully complete remedial math.
